Foreign Ministry to Assist 11 Indonesians Scam Victims in Myanmar

Inp.polri.go.idJakarta. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday (26/8/2026) that it will assist the repatriation of 11 Indonesians from Myawaddy, Myanmar, who are suspected victims of an online scam, following a complaint from the Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (SBMI).

“We will coordinate with the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Yangon, which will work with local authorities,” said Judha Nugraha, the Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection (PWNI) and Indonesian Legal Body (BHI) at the Ministry, as quoted by antaranews.com.

He said that the Ministry has coordinated with the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok since the victims arrived in Myanmar after transiting in Thailand. The 11 Indonesians include 10 men and one woman, with eight from Sukabumi, two from Bandung, and one from Bangka Belitung.

In 2024, the Ministry recorded 107 cases of Indonesians in Myawaddy, with 41 having returned to Indonesia and 66 still awaiting repatriation.

SBMI received reports on 16 August 2024 that the victims were promised high-paying jobs in Thailand but ended up in Myanmar with inadequate wages, poor working conditions, and limited communication access.
