Russian Journalists Sold the Nobel Peace Prize to Help Ukrainian Children

inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov sold the Nobel medal he won in 2021 to help victims of the war in Ukraine, especially children. The editor-in-chief of the Novaya Gazete media sold the Nobel Peace Prize for US$103.5 million, or equivalent to Rp1.5 trillion, as quoted by AFP.

The buyer is an American citizen from New York whose identity cannot be revealed.

Moratov won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 along with Filipino journalist Maria Ressa for her efforts to safeguard freedom of expression. He was one of several journalists who founded the Novaya Gazete media in 1993.

Novaya Gazete itself is the only media from Russia that continues to criticize President Vladimir Putin for ordering the invasion of Ukraine.

Novaya Gazete has been banned by the Russian government since last March because of the media’s stance against the invasion of Ukraine. The arrests came after Moscow imposed prison sentences on critics of the Kremlin’s policies over the invasion of its neighboring country.

The proceeds from the sale of the Nobel Prize medal are planned to be donated to UNICEF’s Humanitarian Response to Children in Ukraine Displaced by War.

Muratov himself was once assaulted in a train. Someone splashed oil paint mixed with acetone on his face causing severe irritation to the eyes.
