inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. The Great Headquarter of the Indonesian National Police will start the security scheme for the 20th National Sports Week (PON XX of Papua next week). The additional security personnel from outside of Papua would be sent to Papua.
Assistant for the Chief of Indonesian National Police for Operational Field, Police Inspector General Imam Sugianto, stated that the security would involve all Police elements, including the Counterterrorism Special Detachment 88 (Densus 88) of Indonesian National Police.
“On the next week (personnel would be added) during the PON security operation commencement on September 18, 2021. All Police elements are deployed”, Police Inspector General Imam Sugianto said when being asked about the deployment of Densus 88 on Thursday (9/9/21).
Later, the personnel would be spread across four PON host regions in Papua, such as Jayapura city and regency, Mimika regency, and Merauke regency.
There would be at least 1,600 personnel from Mobile Brigade Unit across the country that would be deployed to secure the PON.
As information, Police anticipating threats from the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) during the PON event in October. KKB is a term coined by the personnel to the militant group of OPM (Independent Papua Organisation) that conduct armed separatist movements and resistance.
PON will be held from October 2 to 15, 2021. However, the government has not decided whether the event would include or exclude spectators.
Papua Regional Police stated that KKB and the demonstration conducted by the West Papua National Committee (KNPB) must be anticipated as the main threat during the PON event later.
Both things would be anticipated through the City Security System Simulation (Sispamkota) in approaching the event.
“The main threat in Papua province is the disturbance from the KKB and KKP groups. Anticipation also required from the KNPB-ridden demonstration actions who tries to fail and create riot during the PON XX event in Papua”, Chief of PR and Press Agency of Papua Regional Police, Police Grand Commissioner Ahmad Musthofa Kamal said on Saturday (4/9/21).
