Destroying Marine Biota, West Java Regional Police Arrested Six Fishers Who Use Explosives to Catch Fish

Inp.polri.go.id – Cirebon. The Directorate of Water and Air (Ditpolairud) West Java Regional Police arrested six fishermen from Indramayu Regency who used explosives to look for fish, along with confiscation of several pieces of evidence.

The Director of Polairud West Java Regional Police, Pol Grand Commissioner Widi Handoko explained there are six fishers originated from Indramayu District who were arrested because of the use explosive to catch fish.

The six fishermen are MZ (22), W (35), WK (32), FK (26), K (40) and KA (19). They were arrested at different coordinate points, but still in Cantigi territorial water area, Indramayu Regency.

The Director of Polairud West Java Regional Police explained the activities carried out by the six fishers from Indramayu Regency were illegal fishing, so they were arrested.

He also mentioned from the six suspects, his team confiscated number of explosives in the form of “flash powder”, generators, communication devices, plastic containing explosives, and other items.

“One of the evidence used was mercon (a kind of firecracker),” as explained bythe Director of Polairud West Java Regional Police.

In addition, he said what the six fishers did was serious marine criminal act, because it damaged marine ecosystem.

The Director of Polairud West Java Regional Police confirmed that his team would take firmer action to the supplier of explosive material so that illegal “fishing” activities could be minimized as little as possible.

For his actions, the suspect was charged with Article 1 of the Emergency Law Number 12 Year 1951 concerning Explosives and Firearms, with maximum imprisonment of 20 years. And, Article 84 of Republic of Indonesia Law Number 45 Year 2009 on Fisheries, six years imprisonment and a fine of IDR 1.2 billion.
