inp.polri.go.id. – Jakarta. The Directorate of Cyber Crime (Dittipidiber) Criminal and Investigation Agency, Indonesian National Police, revealed a new crime mode of extortion via WhatsApp. The public should be careful. Quoted through the official Instagram account @SiberPolri, it reveals the chronology of the extortion mode.
First, criminals will take over WhatsApp. One of the ways criminals often use is asking for a one-time password (OTP) which WhatsApp sends via SMS to its users. WhatsApp will send this message if someone accesses your WhatsApp account on another cellphone. If you find this suspicious situation, do not provide the OTP in the form of 6 digits.
Second, after WhatsApp is taken over, WhatsApp will be used to chat, asking for indecent images. Moreover, third, the images obtained will be used to threaten the victim with the account that has been taken over to distribute the image. Next, they will ask for a ransom.
Previously, Cybersecurity observer Alfons Tanujaya said that to take over a hijacked account, you could reinstall WhatsApp and enter the cellphone number we use.
“So even if someone takes over our WhatsApp account, we can reinstall WhatsApp, enter the number we can pull back. Because the SMS goes to our number,” explained Alfons.
So if your account the police are taken over and criminals ask for indecent photos as ransom. Please do not give it because, in the end, they will blackmail the victim.
